The Haunted Castle is the forty-sixth book in the Geronimo Stilton Series. In this story Geronimo, Trap, Thea and Benjamin visit Uncle Samuel Stingysnout's castle.

Synopsis[]

I was just minding my business at home when I got a telephone call. It was my uncle Samuel S. Stingysnout, inviting the whole Stilton family to creepy, faraway Penny Pincher Castle for a big surprise. Moldy Mozzarella! I'm not much of a travelling mouse, and I hate surprises .But Thea, Trap and Benjamin were going, so I couldn't say no. I could tell this was going to be one super-spooky trip!

Plot[]

The book begins with Geronimo having a good day when suddenly, he receives a call from Uncle Samuel S. Stingysnout (who, along with the rest of the Stingysnout family is notorious for living up to their name, i.e. finding all sorts of ridiculous and absurd ways to save on anything remotely relating to money) about some sort of ceremony. When Geronimo tries to get an answer from Samuel about what the ceremony is for, the phone cuts.

When Geronimo explains this to Thea, Trap and Benjamin, they decide to go despite their complaints at how cheap the castle is. When they get there, Uncle Samuel greets them in tears. After a long bit of crying and questioning and blowing his nose on Geronimo's suit, Uncle Samuel reveals that the ceremony was a funeral for the recently-deceased Uncle Bigwig Stingysnout. Geronimo and his family feel odd, as they had never heard of Uncle Bigwig until now.

At the funeral, Bigwig's lawyer reads Bigwig's will, which states that Penny Pincher Castle is reserved for Uncle Samuel and Uncle Samuel only, much to the old mouse's glee. As the funeral continued, Geronimo noticed 4 very peculiar things: 1) no one else in the family, Stilton or Stingysnout seemed to remember or even know who Uncle Bigwig was, 2) the family album seemed to have vanished when Geronimo went to check, 3) Bigwig's coffin was inexplicably light, and 4) Bigwig had passed away due to acute ratitis, which Geronimo had never heard of before.

After trying to sleep, Geronimo decides to make himself some tea, along with Thea, Trap and Benjamin. In the kitchen, they discuss how strange this funeral is and decide to investigate. Thea proceeded to open Bigwig's coffin, and to everyone's shock, it was indeed empty.

Suddenly, the 4 mice hear a sound coming from outside, and to their surprise, it was none other than Uncle Samuel. When the Stiltons question him, Samuel reveals the truth - he made up Uncle Bigwig and the Funeral and Bigwig's will saying that Penny Pincher Castle was all his actually due to him finding a paper stating that the castle was for both Stiltons AND Stingysnouts. Samuel just didn't want to lose his longtime home. The Stiltons decide to forgive him, and when they say that the catch is that he loans the castle for vacations, he accuses them of wanting to bankrupt him and faints.

To break the glass when Uncle Samuel comes to, Geronimo's Uncle Gagrat tells some jokes, which make the Stiltons crack up but not the Stingysnouts due to them seeing laughing as "wasting their breath". Gagrat notices Chintzina, Uncle Samuel's sister in particular, and tells her a joke. Surprisingly, she laughs at it. Throughout the next week, Gagrat tries to woo Chintzina, with almost every attempt ruined by Uncle Samuel's frugality. It works out, as Gagrat and Chintzina announce that they will be marrying soon.

Both families are ecstatic, but Samuel once again tries to save on money, this time by making their wedding essentially fake. However, Chintzina declares that this wedding will be true and EXPENSIVE. Samuel faints again.

The next morning, Chintzina disappears for a wedding shopping spree. When she finally returns, she had gotten an enormous makeover to the point where she is almost unrecognizable.

Trivia[]

  • Geronimo had already been to a castle in "Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House". However, the two books are different  enough to be allowed to exist simultaniously.
  • Despite the title, Penny Pincher Castle is never stated to actually be haunted.
